School Access : There is a Primary and Secondary School in this village. The literacy rate is about 70%.
Health Care Accessibility : There is a hospital and a maternity clinic in Meckhe.
Regional Challenges : The issues facing this community are desertification and high unemployment. Deforestation and the rapid decline of vegetation in the area, a lack of rainfall and lower crop yields as a result, a lack of biodiversity, the disintegration of socio-cultural values, the growth of poverty in the region, clash of existing social values with the modern world.
Recent Community Initiatives: The community has initiated a tree-planting program to help combat desertification. As well, a group of people in Meckhe launched an IT training center that offers IT training. There has been the recent construction of a women's employment center to support women seeking jobs.

Presentation of the Ecovillage
Mékhé is located at 100 km from Dakar on the Saint-Louis main road, at the north of the region of Thiès, in a sahelian zone.
Environmental problems :
Mekhé is located on the plains of the ancient kingdom of Kayor eroded by many decades of groundnut intensive culture; this locality is threatened by desertification, degradation of the environment and poverty if effective dispositions are not set :
Activities: Mékhe, a rural trading crossroads, is a 19 000 inhabitants district. The population of 80% of Ouolof devote themselves to agriculture, arts and crafts, trading and cattle breeding.
1 SOLAR DRIERS AND COOKS PROJECT IN AFRICA :
Contribution to the development and promotion of the use of solar energy in cooking and food treatment.
Objectives : struggle against deforestation, the sustainable protection of natural resources and the environment, health preservation and the population food security, to alleviate women's labor, the chronic unemployment of young people, income raising of peasants, fishermen and stock breeders.
2 EDUCATION PROJECT :
Preservation in the traditional school by the means of emergent technologies PALETTE
To improve the learning environment and to raise the students level with the view of the adaptation and the improving of living conditions of citizens-to-be while preserving their cultural identity.
To develop a model of educational methods for the mind's awakening for creativity and the children innovation and their personal appropriation of their heritage while basing on a scientific way (appropriate technologies, new information and communication technologies, renewable energies, the protection of the environment) Provide educational means ( collections of texts, albums, CD ROM, web site, learning modules ) that contribute to the preservation, the development and the diffusion of our heritage.
HEALTH PROJECT : Malaria prevention and treatment by A-3
Malaria is an endemic illness in Senegal as in tropical and subtropical countries of Africa, Asia and America.
For the eradication of this sickness, our Ecovillage proposes the culture and use of the Artemisia Annua or A-3 that is a Chinese plant that has anti malarial potentialities and that can be cultivated in the tropical regions, since it is adapting with easiness to this climate.
CULTURAL PROJECT The Gadialdé
This is a cultural and economic meeting that gathers, annually, modern and traditional artists, economic actors and partners, during three days, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
